How to get ahead in the search for talent

If you’re looking to build an effective talent pipeline in 2025, January could be key. Here are five ways your business can make the most of the coming summer months to set it up for success in 2025.

1. Plan early and strategically

Finding a new job is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions people have. In fact, it comes in third behind going on a holiday and being more environmentally aware.

Even those who aren’t consciously making resolutions, often begin to float the idea or test the water when they’re on holidays and away from work.

But at the same time as people are looking for a move, few employers are in the market and actively looking to recruit.  By getting in at the start of the year, you can get a jump on rivals and beat the Autumn rush for talent.

Actionable tips

Identify key hiring needs for 2025 now.  Assess your upcoming projects, pinpoint critical roles and prioritise hiring for roles that you’d like  to have filled before autumn.

Be flexible. Given that it is summer, come up with some realistic timelines that take into account the season’s disruptions like team absences or candidate availability issues.

Create Contingency Plans. Appoint backup interviewers or decision-makers in case primary team members are unavailable. Keep the process moving without bottlenecks.

2. Think casual (then permanent)

Summer can provide a unique window to connect with fresh talent pools, who aren’t available throughout the rest of the year. That could be university students on their extended break, teachers with extra availability or graduates looking to enter the workforce.

These groups can make a great contribution over the summer months and some might even stay on after that, giving you a competitive edge in sourcing candidates who are ready to contribute immediately.

Actionable tips

  • Focus on key demographics. Target ads at groups that are naturally available in summer, including:
    • Students: High school and college students often want seasonal work. By giving them a start now, you may find a long-term hire in the future.
    • Teachers: They often have summers free and may take on roles aligned with their skills.
    • Graduates. Many may have just finished school or university and are looking for their first ‘real’ job.
    • Retirees: Summer is often also when many retirees look for short-term roles to supplement income or stay engaged.
  • Highlight perks in job descriptions. You can often attract candidates at this time of year by emphasising things like flexible schedules, as well as any seasonal bonuses or performance incentives.
  • Ensure job ads are specific. Define essential skills and expectations to filter for candidates who can contribute immediately.

3. Streamline the hiring process

Summer recruitment is all about striking while the iron is hot. Wait too long, and you may give other businesses the chance to compete for talent that could be yours. Look for ways to simplify and speed up your process to secure top talent before competitors enter the fray.

Actionable tips

  • Use virtual tools. Video conferencing through Zoom or Teams means you can speak with candidates no matter where they (or you) are, helping speed up the interview process. They also come with recording functionality, so key people who can’t attend may be able to watch the interview later. (Just make sure any candidate agrees to this first ).
  • Streamline decision-making.
    • Use standardised feedback forms to ensure consistency and clarity in evaluations, no matter who carries out the interview. You should also have set questions you ask an and analyse
    • Schedule dedicated feedback sessions to align your team quickly and avoid delays in final decisions.

4. Leverage employee recognition and engagement

Retaining talent over summer is just as important as finding it – especially as this is the time of year people make decisions to move on (see 1 above).  A positive and engaging workplace helps attract candidates and keeps your team motivated during summer, so that they don’t become someone else’s talent.

Actionable tips

  • Foster a supportive environment. Don’t forget to recognise employee contributions publicly even when a lot of people may be away.
  • Embrace flexibility. Let people enjoy this special time of year. Promote remote work options where you can, to help employees balance personal and professional lives.
  • Do things as a team. Encourage outdoor breaks or activities to reduce burnout and boost morale over the summer months.

5. Build long-term relationships with seasonal hires

Hiring for summer doesn’t have to be short-term. Seasonal employees can become future assets if managed well, reducing recruitment costs in the long run.

Actionable Tips:

  • Track your summer hires. One of the great things about offering summer work on a fixed contract is that it almost gives you a ‘try before you buy’ clause for potential staff.  Figure out who could fit for permanent roles later, and offer them casual work until they’re ready to join you full-time.
  • Make it worth staying. If there’s a risk people will leave before the summer is over, offer incentives, like end-of-season bonuses, to retain workers through the summer.
  • Keep your processes running. Conduct stay and exit interviews to gather insights for future improvements.

In short…

Summer may be a time for holidays, but it isn’t a time to sit still when it comes to hiring. With the right processes in place, you can set your team up for success at this time of year, even if you’re not around.
